The version of progestin that is the active ingredient in Yaz (called desogestrel) is exactly what has made Yaz one of the most prescribed brands of birth control in the world- and one of the most dangerous. This hormone has undergone many chemical changes over the years in an attempt to take contraceptives from mere “birth control,” to include the treatment of common symptoms of PMS like cramping, bloating, acne, and irritability.
